Tempers are beginning flare over the spate of attacks
carried out by Fulani herdsmen across the country and recent statement credited
to President Muhammadu Buhari that these killer herdsman carrying out these
killings are not Nigerians may have made matters worse.
Buhari who recently arrived Nigeria after a 4-day working
visit to the United Kingdom where he participated in the London Anti-Corruption
Summit hosted by British Prime Minister, David Cameron has come under fire from
a section of Nigerians after he said the herdsmen responsible for the attacks
across Nigeria migrated from Libya.
The president who made this disclosure on
Saturday, May 14 in London on the CNN said following the fall of the Ghadaffi
regime, some people from the Sahel who were trained by the regime dispatched to
other countries in the region and began causing trouble.
Buhari who said it was
the custom for herdsmen to roam about to feed their cattle complained that the
cattle routes and grazing areas marked for herdsmen had been taken over and
turned to farms by some influential persons.
Following the president’s
statements, some Nigerians particularly those from the southwest of the country
have accused the president of defending the rampaging herdsmen because he is a
northerner. Many of the critics of the president said it was irrational for him
to say the rampaging herdsmen were from Libya, adding that they were Nigerians
from the northern part of the country.
