President Peter Mutharika of Malawi has according to reports
from Nyasa Times told the people of Malawi who are starving to eat grasshoppers
and mice since they are faced with starvation. This he said would be a means to
cope with the country’s food shortage as contained in a statement made during a
political rally.
He further stressed the need for the people of Malawi to be
resourceful in their search of food and money. He compelled them to eat wild
animals and insects rather than die from hunger.
With mixed feelings, Bishop Martin Mtumbuka called on the
president and the leaders of the Malawi people to find others means of dealing
with starvation rather than making running commentary on the problem.
Bishop Martin Mtumbuka said he did not understand how Malawi
could be facing starvation when adequate water exists for irrigation purposes.
Mtumbuka compared his country to Zambia who has been having
bumper maize harvest. He went further to say that the Malawian gov’t had previously
imported maize worth $63M so as to combat food shortage caused by draught. An additional
$237M is also needed to feed 8.4M Malawians who is in danger of starvation.
Though it was in the news that Malawi’s food production
would decrease by 50% this year, Mutharika at the time assured citizens that
no-one would die of hunger in the country.
